Fujifilm FinePix HS30EXR - Long zoom versatility and exceptional image quality
Fujifilm is delighted to announce the launch of the FinePix HS30EXR, the latest in a long line of market-leading bridge cameras loved by photo enthusiasts all over the world.
The HS range has become synonymous with versatility and optical quality among those photographers who don't want the lens-changing capability of a DSLR, but still want total control over their images.
The HS30EXR includes a number of key specification improvements over the HS20EXR model it replaces. The Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) has been greatly improved while a switch in power supply to a Lithium-ion rechargeable battery delivers up to 600 pictures per charge. These are just some of the changes that will ensure the HS30EXR keeps the Fujifilm name at the forefront of the bridge camera market in 2012.
New sensor, even better pictures
The FinePix HS30EXR features an improved EXR-CMOS sensor, which gives the user even more versatility, most notably in low light conditions. By redesigning the shape of the photo diodes used in the EXR-CMOS sensor, the images display 30% less digital noise at higher ISO settings, which results in smoother tones and better low light images.
The EXR-CMOS sensor offers three different user-selectable options: High Resolution (HR) delivers the best results in bright lighting conditions or when fine detail in an image is of paramount importance. Wide Dynamic Range (DR) Priority is ideal for capturing images in high contrast light situations, when the user wants detail in both shadow and highlight areas, while High Sensitivity and Low Noise (SN) Priority is the one to choose in low-light. All of these modes can be selected, or it can be left to the HS30EXR to choose through the EXR AUTO function.
Never miss a shot
Composing images on these HS-series can be done using either the 3-inch tilting LCD or the Electronic Viewfinder (EVF), both of which have been substantially improved over the HS20EXR. The LCD uses 460,000 dots to display menus and images with great clarity and now benefits from a brighter screen that ensures it's easy to view, even in direct sunlight.
Meanwhile, the FinePix HS30EXR’s EVF is also larger at 0.26-inches and features 920,000 dots, compared to only 200,000 dots on the HS20EXR, making for a far clearer viewing image.
Viewing comfort has also been boosted thanks to a 22 degree viewing angle (16 degrees on the HS20EXR) and the whole picture taking experience has been improved through a substantial reduction in starting up period compared to the HS20EXR. The starting up period is now just around a half compared with that of HS20EXR. The writing period after continuous shooting has also been dramatically cut to approximately 2 seconds (compared to 20 seconds on the HS20EXR).
A lens for every occasion
Sitting at the heart of the HS-series is a Fujinon 30x optical zoom lens offering a huge focal range from 24-720mm (equivalent to a 35mm camera). This enables photographers to tackle almost any type of subject matter from sweeping landscapes to fine details on wild animals.
But there may be occasions when users require even more telephoto power to pull in really distant details and, thanks to the Intelligent Digital Zoom function, this is now possible. This doubles the focal range, delivering a massive 60x zoom with a maximum telephoto setting of 1440mm. What's more, the Intelligent Digital Zoom function doesn't suffer from the problems typically associated with digital zoom capabilities. This is achieved through intelligent image processing where the HS30EXR boosts sharpness in selected areas without increasing digital noise.
Movie making and picture taking made easier
Like the HS20EXR, the HS30EXR also captures 1080p Full HD movies at 30 frames per second, but this hasn't stopped Fujifilm's designers making some key improvements to ensure movie capture is even easier.
Now, it's possible to manually focus during movie shooting for more creative focusing effects, while those preferring to auto focus will benefit in a reduction in focus hunting, so they can keep up with the action. When it comes to still images, the technologies used for Face Detection and Tracking AF have been combined to create Face Tracking Auto Focus. Ideal for capturing all the sporting action and active children, this unique feature allows users to follow the action, ensuring that the faces of friends and loved ones are kept sharp and perfectly exposed.
Finally, the FinePix HS30EXR has also been improved with the addition of a customisable Function (Fn) key on the rear of it. This enables fast access to regularly used functions without needing to go into the full menu each time.

Something else, why would they put a lithium battery in it? My hs20 can be recharged anywhere with alkaline double AAs but you are restricted with the Hs30 to a lithium battery. I love my Hs20 and I do think that would sway me away from an hs30 with the battery if I were still looking for a camera. I can buy alkaline double AAs anywhere and get just as good battery life. Any way, I only need to carry one type of battery for my ef-42 flash, my hs20, and my 2550hd.

I love my Fujifilm HS 20 EXR as well and find that carrying rechargable AA NiMH is fine with me as I need to use the charging unit to recharge the two AA batteries in my EF- 20 flash and two AAA NiMH batteries for a multi-funtion timer remote control. The EF-42 takes four AA batteries. I think Fujifilm designed the camera with this in mind so people wouldn't have to carry two different chargers around with them. I use the Fujicell charging unit model no. SCH-500F because it's easy to use with great features and very compact. The number one reason I bought this camera is because the reviews on it gave the Photo Quality as "Best In It's Class." It's the main reason why I would purchase any camera. Thank You Fujifilm!

I like the look of this one, that 2 seconds recording of burst mode shots instead of 20 seconds on the HS20 should be enough to persuade a lot of buyers. I still love my HS10 but Im very interested in this newer version.

I think there is no much difference with Hs20 or even hs20 is better than this "for me" because of AA batteries. If they didn't use same sensor I could take this

I would have been really unhappy if they had put a full frame sensor in the HS30.
I agree it would be better but then I would be unhappy with not just waiting for the hs30.

I love my HS20EXR, what's not to love about it?
However, I for one, applaud those innovative, ingenious people at Fujifim. They never rest on their laurels, amazingly managing to improve each year on what went brilliantly before.
Look at it this way, if Fujifilm were content to keep an outdated model just in case buyers got offended everytime their camera was bettered, neither you, nor I would have ended up buying a Fujifilm camera in the first place! (Now that would be something to cry about)!
It looks to me as though Fujiilm have listened to their critics and come up with another dose of shut-up juice to sooth their minor gripes, (for another year at least).
For those of you considering upgrading from your HS-10, if you can afford it, I'd go for the HS-30 without a second thought, it'll be blow the socks off the opposition, guaranteed!

I'm with you on those AA batteries, with a decent set of NiMH mine goes forever on a freshly charged set! Like you I have a Fujufilm flash, (EF-42), so I never use the built in unit.
Furthermore, I suspect 4 sets of 4 NiMH AA's are cheaper than a spare LiIon dedicated battery, and I bet you can't buy one of those from a petrol station in Outer Mongolia?

keep on saving, go for the HS30, the EVF, Burst Mode 2 sec write rate, and Improved lower noise at high ISO are three damn good reasons!
On the other hand if the 30 ends up too pricey, you could do so much worse than an HS20, it's a fantastic bit of kit!

I have had an HS 30 EXR for two weeks now, this is my second. I will keep this short and sweet. It is technologically spectacular does all it says on the tin. Image quality in all modes is superb but unlike on the SL300 where the cover has been altered to accommodate the li - on battery on the HS30 it is the similar design to the HS20. Having charged the battery twice the cover became so loose that it affected camera handling. I returned it as faulty as it was replaced but after one week the same problem reared it's head. Excessive movement in the cover. I wrote to Fuji suggesting that it might had been prudent to follow the example of the SL 300 design and the reply was ' our technicians have examined a number of HS30 models and there is a little play in the covers but this should not affect the performance of the camera.' maybe not but especially when holding the camera in portrait mode the play, no excessive movement, does affect your faith in the cameras spectacularly unimpressive build. There seems little point in returning this one I shall simply wait until the tiny spring and watch strap style pin which hold the cover detach themselves from the body then return it to Fuji. It won't stay intact for 12 months that's for sure. At 389GBP build should be as important as image quality. I would welcome Mr Finepix comments. Update : Fuji have now offered to inspect myreplacement so will wait with baited breath for the response.

the only bridge camera worthy of being a full from camera would be the fuji sx-1,the hs30 is ok for a amatuar but the sx-1 has a much better lense,a bigger censor and full continuas shooting and not just burst mode,but as fuji has the new pro camera then i dont think they need another camera just yet.

I have used other brands of bridge camera and despaired at the very slow start up time, short battery life and unresponsive/slow zoom action to the point of losing interest in what I was doing in the first place. I read with great interest about the Fuji HS30 with It's mega 30x zoom lens (manual action) fast start up (wildlife still close enough to get a shot) and 16 mega-pixel to boot, well I just had to have one......
A few weeks later and behold, I have A nice new Fuji HS30 and so far a joy to use, photos to follow.

I have had image quality problems with my HS20, they come out like paintings sometimes. How's the quality on the HS30? On the computer screen do they look like pictures or paintings? The only reason I ask is because the HS30 has an "improved" sensor and I am kicking myself as it is for not just waiting a month and a half (that is seriously what the time was before fuji announced the hs30) for the HS30 to come out for that better card write time and that improved sensor. I have had trouble with photographing events for friends because the CMOS is not suited for the full telephoto length on the HS20. Even in broad daylight the picture is not crisp.
