Finepix s4500

First time fuji user. Bought a Finepix s4500 but I can't get the flash to work. In auto flash setting, image blur icon shows but no flash activated. In forced flash, shutter won't depress and no picture can be taken. I've checked manual and I'm not in continous or macro mode and only trying to shoot in Auto and SR auto mode at the moment. Batteries have been fully charged. I'm totally baffled, but as I said, I'm a first time user of Fuji (have compacts of other makes). Any help would be appreciated.

Check your settings and make sure you're not in "silent" mode, as the flash doesn't work when "silent" is enabled.

i know this is probably a really stupid question but you are manually opening the flash unit before pressing the shutter arn't you ? becouse the flah doesnt automatically pop up on a bridge camera

like markc_fletcher im a first time user of fuji.. have the same camera, i've seen the posts made sure im not in continous or macro, but my camera still wont flash when taking pictures.. any more help?
